Then when I am able to accelerate, the rpms go back down to less than 2000. It seems that the transmission doesn't know what it's supposed to do in these short distances. Is this normal or something I should have checked?
It seems the CVT is programmed to give us some engine braking going downhill in order not to use too much brakes.

That may be the reason if I understand correctly.

If you have the paddle shifters, play with it while downhill to try to figure where you are (go to a higher gear and look if the car moves more freely).

Thanks for the reply/suggestion. Unfortunately, I don't have the paddle shifters so I can't try that.

Since posting last week about the grinding sound, it has gotton worse. I have an appointment tomorrow, Saturday, for an oil change and I will speak to the service manager about this and have them check it out. While I'm certainly not happy about this, I still love my Rogue and Nissan vehicles. Crap happens, right?

I did some brief searching this morning and decided to go to the NHTSA site and found 24 complaints filed with them about the Rogue, starting in December of 2007. Of those 24 complaints, 12 were transmission related. I realize this is a small number compared to the number of Rogues sold, but it's obviously a problem that I hope Nissan will find a fix for soon. And how many people know that they are able to file complaints here? I was aware of NHTSA but until today, never went to their website.

I'll let you know what happens at the dealership tomorrow.

Re: engine revs while descending

Mine does the same. It caught me off guard when I first noticed it, but as Kenny mentions, its just the CVT doings its normal thing. I believe it is simply adjusting gear ratios when it detects change in velocity.

A couple of instances where I've found this also to occur.

When cruising right around 30 MPH, when lightly depressing the gas, the RPM's actually go DOWN compared to when my foot is off the gas.

When driving at around 50 MPH on a windy day, whenever my car caught a gust of tail wind, I'd see huge changes in engine revs.

Weird, but I think that's how the CVT works. Its constantly adjusting.

Tranny problem isn't that prevalent.....

...well y'all...since I'm the main one thats been
monitoring the other Rogue forum to see how
prevalent the tranny "rattle" problem is, I'm ready
to make a judgement....

The other forums ongoing count of this tranny
problem, after several months, shows only 46 total
AWD entries, 27 with the problem and 19 without.
That's more with the problem than without! Just
can't be, not logical....if that were true, you'd
be hearing about it on the news, papers, etc.,
recalls would be published....Also, there is very
few to none that has that problem on this forum??

What this tells me is....yes, Nissan does have a
tranny problem, but only with a very small per-
centage of total vehicles....still don't know
what or why, or what the fix is other than the
total replacement of the tranny? But, the odds,
are on OUR side that we won't experience it.

Anyway, unless the problem makes itself known
with my Rogue sometime in the future, I'm put'n
this puppy to bed.

We have about 5k miles on ours and all is well.

Makes sense to me since we've not had an AWD owner register wondering about their Rogue and Transmission problems/sounds.

So how's the Mrs liking the Rogue since you turned it over to her?

I don't understand...what do you mean "...turned it
over to her?...", she took it! (lol!) Not really, she
needed something that sat higher, (easier to get
in and out of), because of her knee problem. She
loves the Rogue...we've had no problems and the
mpg has been very good.....and, its not like I
came out on the losing end of the deal, I took her
really nice Acura with on 15k miles on it, so I did
alright too, I ain't griping....both are nice wheels.

Took my Rogue in for service yesterday and spoke to the service manager. Since they were swamped yesterday and only open until 1pm, I'm bringing it back in on Friday, Sept. 5 for them to check out the tranny. I will say though, he didn't seem at all surprised by my complaint.

The highlight of my visit to the dealership yesterday was being able to check out the Nissan GT R yesterday! WOW! They had it in the service bay, bought and paid for, just waiting for the new owner to pick up. Sticker on it was $74k and the guy bought it for just under $100k because of shipping the vehicle to this particular location.

Mistergib.......I too follow the other forum and they now have two FWD owners with the transmission problem. This confirms my original suspicions that this "problem" is not a transfercase problem, and not the front transaxle problem that has been posted by others. I truly believe it originates with a bad batch of trannys that some owners have.
That would acount for some dealers being aware of it and some not. I'm sure that Nisaan knows whats going on, but can't quite track where the effected vehicles are in either Canada or the U.S. Again, that would explain why some areas of the two countries get immediate service and others don't.
Someone way smarter than me should do this, but we should be able to identify when a particular vehicle was assembled, and when a transmission was built. There must be something on the transmission that gives its manufactured date.
Then, owners would have some idea if there Rogue "could" be affected.

Hey Rocket....you could be right?? One thing...all
our Rogues have a manufacture date regardless of
going to Canada or the USA.

If the people that have, or have had the tranny
problem would post the date of manufacture of
the car, that might head us in the right direction.
That mfg date is usually on the drivers door
frame...but usually only gives the month and year.

Maybe that would indicate something, maybe it
wouldn't?? Worth a shot!

I purchased a Rogue in June 08 , we did not know about this forum before making the purchase.
If we had, we may have reconsidered a Rogue!
We are experiencing a very loud noise with the transmission. It was noticeable after the first 100 miles. however, we did not notice it when we test drove. We have had it in twice for repair and were told that our car was not manufactered in the "time frame" that the Rogue's with transmission issues have occured. Our car, supposedly was manufatered in November 07, but they tell us the ISSUES were all before that date, up to October 07. We have placed ateast 3 phone calles to the Nissan Company, and several e-mails. So far all we have done is play play "phone tag" with them. I have read the "Michigan Lemon Law" and do feel that it may be the only option that we have, down the road.
