RogueRage, I would highly recommend getting your tranny replaced, it won't change how the vehicle operates, the replacement tranny is the exact same model that comes standard on all 2009 Rogue vehicles - I know this for a fact because my buddy is the parts guy at my dealership and checked for me. So you'd just be upgrading to 2009 standards and leaving the defective and abandoned 2008 design behind.

My dealer replaced my CVT yesterday, it was a completely pain free process. We waited for Nissan to come up with a fix for the rattling problem, once they did my Service manager contacted me and recommended replacing my tranny with an upgraded re-designed model (the same one that comes with all 2009 Rogues). They ordered it up, it came in a couple of weeks, and yesterday they installed it in about 5 hours - really quick job.

The car runs flawlessly now, I would encourage anyone with even a subtle rattle in the CVT at low decerlation speeds to bring up the issue with your service manager and hopefully get a new tranny, as the one on the '08's has problems.

So what's the TSB number for this swap?

There is no TSB regarding the noise in the 2008 tranny's, not yet anyway, or not that I know of. The Service Tech's identify the problem as it is reported, check with Nissan and judging from my experience, Nissan Canada informs them that the fix is to install and upgraded transmission, the same one that comes standard on all 2009 Rogues.

Update: After having my rattling 2008 Rogue tranny replaced 2000 km ago, I couldn't be happier. The tranny performs flawlessly, is smooth as can be, I get great gas mileage and lots of power, and best of all no noise - it is completely silent. My conclusion after all of this is that the CVT should be silent, if anyone tries to tell you otherwise they are either misinformed or lying to you. My original tranny started getting noisy quite soon after I bought it and it got prgressively worse, and I think the performace was going downhill too. My dealer replaced with no questions asked, stated that this was the only course of action and that the noise was a sign of internal failure - just one of those unlucky bad parts which affect all vehicle manufacturers. So the new CVT is great and I would encourage anyone with CVT noise to insist that the problem be addressed by your service department, because it is an indicator of internal failure, and this is an expensive fix that you don't want to incur after warranty expires. The good news is the defective ones always seem to show up early, so if you don't hear a noise I'm sure you'll have nothing to worry about a decade or more into the future.

Cool, and I agree with your outlook that it was just one of those things and not a wide spread sweeping problem as some on other forums tried to make it seem. I now have 115,000 miles on our 04 Nissan Titan and wouldn't hesitate to buy a first or second year new model nissan again.

Tranny Problems

It is February 17th and we FINALLY just got the noise fixed in our car. We too had the grinding problem since we purchased the car in January 2008. We too had the dealership check out the problem everytime we took it in for an oil change. We too got the runaround "the noise is normal, deal with it", "we can't duplicate the noise", "nissan is working on a fix and it will be available early 2009", etc.

We had enough and contacted the Lemon Law people in our state. Would you believe that within 5 days from contacted the Lemon Law company we received a call from the dealership and they now had a fix for our car?

We had a new transaxle installed on February 3rd and we are waiting for a check from Nissan for our time and inconvienence.

Since this problem has been fixed, we seemed to have lost the downhill assist feature? Cool feature, but I would much rather not have the noise.

We are in the process now of getting the downhill feature back and I will let you know how I make out.

Feel free to ask me any questions you have.

There are several posts on the other Rogue
site concerning this.

Anybody on this site heard funny noises coming
from their trannys and low speed under light
acceleration?? The noises are suupposed to be
"clicking" and "grinding" sounds.

Transmission Problems

My transmission was replaced at 22,000 in May (2008 AWD). At that time the technician at the dealership said that they had not had any other Rogues with the same problem. A very good friend just took her Rogue in yesterday (also an 08 AWD) and will be getting a new transmission next week. She was told by the tech that there are 3 more ahead of hers waiting on the trannys. We were both concerned that this might happen again if Nissan hasn't identified and corrected the problem so I googled looking for others with the same issue. Ended up here! I am hearing a strange noise again and the car seems to have difficulty getting the right gear. Slower speeds are the bigger issue.

Also the Rogue has "adaptive logic control", if you read the list of features it's right there. What this means is that the computer learns your driving habits and "tunes" the CVT and throttle response to your preferences. Remember your car has an electronic throttle/gas peddle, it is not linked to the engine throttle, just to the computer. So when you press on the throttle the computer interprets what you want to do and selects the appropriate gear ratio and opens the throttle appropriately. If you are an agressive driver, hard on the gas and brakes, the computer adapts to this and when you press on the throttle it will give you a lower gear and more throttle than someone who drives conservatively. What this means is that each person's Rogue will perform a little differently because the computer has learned from different driving habits. If you are a conservative driver this vibration will be more noticeable because you will always be in the highest gear resulting in the lowest rpms. Agressive drivers won't notice this as much in their Rogues becuase they'll spend more time in a lower gear with high rpms which does not produce the vibration you are experiencing. So this would explain differences from one Rogue to the next, and yes I experience the vibration but don't notice it any more and feel it is completely normal. It not only has to do with the high gearing of the CVT but also the long stroke of the QR25 engine in the Rogue, which is designed to work with the high gearing. Trust the Nissan engineers that designed this powertrain, there is lots of sophisticated engineering contained in your Rogue and it has been well tested. The vibration is normal.

I current have a leased 2006 Murano that I love. I'm looking to go a little smaller and test drove a 2009 FWD Rogue last week. I liked it as well (just felt like a smaller version of my Murano). But I've also read alot about transmissions problems in the Rogue. From what I've read, on this site and others, it seems like the problem is limited to AWD versions and Nissan has fixed the issue in the 2009 models. Can anyone confirm this?
