Squid, Your point is well taken. You're right, and I have been trying hard to determine if there is such a thing as "normal" CVT noises. After talking with several Nissan Techs and one Master Nissan service Tech, the answer seems to be that the tranny should always be silent, however the noise shouldn't cause any problems. It's that last part that I've always had problems with, because a grinding/rattle noise in the trans, even though it's very brief lasting no more than one second at a time, sounds like a problem in the making and over the course of 100k, 200k + miles I'm sure would be become a real problem. So, have you and anyone else ever noticed that very brief rattle noise at low parking lot speeds - the radio needs to be turned off to really hear it, but it's very clear when it happens.

I disagree. Of course I'm not a Nissan engineer or expert on what is causing the issue, but stating that "replacing the tranny won't help because the noise will just return" does not make sense to me. If this was the case, then this problem should be affecting ALL Rogues, but I don't believe this is the case. It seems that only a small number of Rogues have this problem, which leads me to believe it is a component quality control or assembly problem with some specific tranny's, and that being the case, replacing the defective tranny should solve the problem. If it is a problem with the design of the tranny like you state, then this is a huge problem because all Rogues would be affected. Mine is at the shop getting checked for the noise today, I'll let you know what they tell me.

After getting the "Nissan is working on a fix, just wait" response for a while, my service dept. just informed me that I will now be getting a new and improved "upgraded" tranny which will solve my problem, and the rattle will not return. So either the new tranny's are undergoing better quality control, or they actually recieved an upgraded design - either way I'm happy for the time being. We'll see how it runs after major surgery, it should run exactly how it did when new, and I'm sure the rattle will not return.

I just posted this under the 2009 Rogue thread, but it is relevant here too: So I found out from my buddy who is that parts guy at Nissan, and from several others on the other Rogue forum, that the 2009 Rogues have a completely different transmission than the 2008's had. My '08 is getting the tranny replaced to address the rattling issue, and therefore will be getting the upgraded transmission to '09 standards, but that sucks for all '08 owners who don't get the same benefit. So anyway, this should be piece of mind for 2009 owners who might be wondering about the tranny rattling issue that some have expereinced, this shouldn't be a concern with the new updgraded design.

Tranny Problem We just had our Rogue SL AWD diagnosed for "gurgling" noises evaluated by the dealer that sold us the car. They advised verbally that at low speed (when the noise is heard most prominently) they believe the CVT oil lines are either vibrating or a CVT pump is working overtime at lower speeds. They say it is not causing damage to the CVT but that Nissan is replacing it if the owner wants it replaced. But the fundamental concern is if the new CVT will operate any differently. I've email Nissan of America from their website with my concern and I'm awaiting their response. I'll update the site with any formative comments from Nissan.
