My 09 Rogue is having issues with fueling up

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the forums, and I'm glad they're here. Recently, the check engine light came on. Nothing seemed odd, then it went off. Soon after, I was filling up my Rogue, and after about a gallon or two, and it was only a 1/4 full when I put the nozzle in, it started spraying gas after making a clicking noise. Same thing happened again.

Any thoughts?

Thank you!

If the gas cap isn't on tight you'll get a check engine light. As for the spitting of fuel all my Nissans have done this since 2000. You just have to start out slow until all the vapors have escaped.

Thanks, Squid. Could it also be a gas gauge problem, telling me I'm near empty, but I'm full? I bought it used, no issues, about a year ago. Also, I've had 2 Nissans since 2003, my old Xterra for 7+ years and the Rogue. I don't ever recall having the gas spilling fuel, but when the Xterra was under warranty, they said I had a fuel pump (or something) issue that could've caused it to not accept gas at some point.

I'm going to take it over tomorrow to the dealer.

Thanks again, Squid!

Isn't there a fuel separator/vent cannister that is in the fuel system. Could that be defective?

I had an 02 Altima 2.5S and it never once sprayed gas when I tried to fill it...though almost every other conceivable thing that could have gone wrong with it, did.

Something is wrong, get it checked out. The MIL might be the gas cap, but it could be trying to tell you about the failed fuel filling part thats causing your fuel to back up and douse the side of your car.

Thanks, mayhem. My best friend's friend runs a small mechanic shop, so I'm heading there this weekend.

Did you find out what was wrong as my 09 Rogue shows as 1/4 tank but when I try to fuel up the gas pump kicks off or sprays back. My service engine soon light is on now as well. Thanks!

Yes, the box, if you will, near the rear passenger tire needed to be changed. It wasn't ventilating correctly. My friend did a small repair, and flipped a switch to open, and the problem is solved. If I sell the car, it'll need a new "box," which is where the charcoal is located, too. Sorry for the lack of car techie terms. It's about a $400 or more repair/replacement.

You guys with the gauge showing a 1/4 tank, how many miles did you drive from full to get to a 1/4?

In any case, no matter how full or not full your tank is, it will never ever spray gas all over unless something is seriously wrong with either the gas pump or your car's fuel system. My Altima's evap system was rotted out by the time it was 4 years old. I got rid of the car rather than fix it, it was not covered by warranty and the MIL was on so I wasn't going to pass state inspection and I was looking at a $2000 repair for a 4 year old car with about 65,000 miles on it.

You guys need to get your cars checked out, because there's something very wrong. Since its affecting the feedback loop thats supposed to shut off the gas pump when you get to full, that suggests that there might be some kind of air leak in one of the return lines maybe...could potentially be dangerous. Get it checked and fix it.
