Ah, in the good ol' days they'd just vent the gas tank (and crankcase) to the outside. Oh, how I long for the days of the Ford Falcons pumping crankcase vented smoke under their engines. Smelled good too!

In any case, no matter how full or not full your tank is, it will never ever spray gas all over unless something is seriously wrong with either the gas pump or your car's fuel system. My Altima's evap system was rotted out by the time it was 4 years old. I got rid of the car rather than fix it, it was not covered by warranty and the MIL was on so I wasn't going to pass state inspection and I was looking at a $2000 repair for a 4 year old car with about 65,000 miles on it.

You guys need to get your cars checked out, because there's something very wrong. Since its affecting the feedback loop thats supposed to shut off the gas pump when you get to full, that suggests that there might be some kind of air leak in one of the return lines maybe...could potentially be dangerous. Get it checked and fix it.
It's the ventilation system, that's it. I had it checked by my mechanic, and he said it's a small switch that's not opening and closing, so he flipped it to open, and I will have it swapped out eventually. No hazzard or anything, it's just now open all the time. It's in the back, where the charcoal is for "spillover," but it's not where the fuel line or tank are at. He's been a mechanic for over 20 years, and I trust him.
