2008 Rogue Power Steering Failure

I have a problem with my 2008 Rogue with 33,000 miles (and about 4 months out of warranty). A year ago Nissan agreed to install a new tranny in it because I was having issues with the first one. I was driving it on the highway last week and went to adjust the passenger outside mirror. As soon as I hit the switch I lost all power steering and the red PS light came on. I drove it home let it sit for 20 minutes and restarted it and the power steering was working again. Took it to the local dealer where its been for 3 days and they determined it needed a new steering column due to the fact that the torque angle sensor is defective. Does this make sense? I asked if a new sensor could be ordered but they said no, the entire steering column had to be replaced costing about $1000.00. Thanks so much.

I know they are electric powersteering on these cars but havent ever got into that too much to know that much about them. But replacing the entire column sounds kinda funny to me

Found this Why I Bought a Nissan Rogue. - 2008 Nissan Rogue - Epinions.com by Richard Krzemien "The Rogue is a brand new model from Nissan. Thankfully, they've done a nice job of incorporating a number of the latest technological advances. For example, the Rogue steers using drive-by-wire technology. It makes the steering feel smooth and accurate and reduces the weight of the car."

Maybe this is why it's so expensive to repair. Using a generic cost estimator Steering Rack Replacement might cost $890 to $1309.
