She works nights and I work days, that doesn't leave me with much time to mess with her car, maybe you guys can help me with the recon work. thanks in advance.
sorry to be the barer of bad news, but that A/C control panel actually extends further down than just the knobs. i just took that area apart to run an ipod cable and i took time to take a good look around that area because i actually want to install a 3.5" LCD screen for a back-up camera from the back of the panel to make it flush. further more, the frame work of the dashboard block a lot of the area needed to make the flush work.

here is a picture i took of the dash when i was running the wire.
i know its dark, but take a notice of the opening behind the A/C panel- see how much of the frame work is blocking the flat space that we see on the panel?

i also on ebay went and found the actual panel for sale for you to see from the back

nothing is impossible. i custom fabricated a nissan 350z headlight projector into my 2007 suzuki gsxr 600 headlight and it worked beautifully. you would probably have to loose the cigarette lighter plug & airbag display for your project to work. idk if thats something you really wanna get into. it could end up being a royal pain in the A55. I dont know about yours, but most women dont care for when you take their crap apart and start butchering away LOL
-you could be on a roll, and doing it perfectly; they still will find something to point too (like the now missing cigarette lights plug) that she used LOVE SO MUCH THAT SHE NOW HATES THE CAR FOREVER AND ITS ALL YOUR FAULT!

-get me? lol

PS: AT LEAST THIS ONE IS HONEST!

I hear ya, I know I could do it, I put a sirius receiver in my ashtray compartment in my Mercedes, then wrapped the whole center console in black carbon fiber wrap. just a little bit of dremel work and a lot of patience. but there is no way she we let me do that to her car. I even said I would buy a spare panel and put her stock one back in at the end of the lease, not happening. I'll try again after it falls off the windshield the first time.

hey OP, thank for the great idea. i opted to do exactly what you did. i love the stock head-unit's bluetooth quality so swapping the head-unit isnt something i wanted to do.
wifey got my a garmin gps for Christmas so i sized it up in all the possible locations, and this is the best spot.

here are my photo's:
(sorry for the crappy blackberry pics- but thats all i had at the moment)

took the dash apart to run all the wires in the back. i hate wires cluttering up the interior.

i went to radio shack and got a 1cig lighter male connection that splits into 2 usable female connections. i just cut one female connection off, stripped the wires (wire with white line is the POSITIVE) and stripped the wires from behind the OEM cigarette lighter port and piggy-backed the wires, applied plenty electrical tape, and secure it.

then i ran into the house, updated the maps, and designed this image. i then installed the image into the GPS unit and made it the loading screen as the unit boots up when the car is turned on. i like as much OEM look as possible so this ended up being a really cool idea.

this is the end result:

this gps has some ECO-app that takes your acceleration speed, driving speed, slowing down speeds and computes it into a point system that tells you by numbers & colors if your driving fuel-savor friendly. kinda cool. it also has this OBD blue-tooth port accessory that i will be buying soon that will show you engine temps, etc.
