Man this thing is noisy !

2011 SLAWD. Someone stated recently that you have to drive these things a while before noticing certain things. Well mine sounds sometimes like all the wheel bearings are shot. I'm about 99% sure its the low profile Dunlop tires, as the drumming noise changes with the road surface, but man, is there no carpet pad in these things ?
I only have 8000 miles on this car, but i'm getting less and less impressed !
and don't let me get started on the lean mixture 35mph surging !!

So, anyone have any ideas for noise control? I once stripped out a competition audio vehicle and applied dynamat everywhere, but I used a ton of it and it was expensive stuff. I would consider it on specific panels though i guess, if i could find the main culprits - Hmmm........

The extra noise is from th open cargo area. A cover might help reduce the road noise Nissan Rogue Cargo Area Tonneau Cover - H4982-JM50B

Undercoating. I do it to every vehicle I own.

Low profile Dunlops? I don't have what I would ever call low profile tires on my 08, what size are your tires?

Its a relatively low cost car with a large open storage area. Its going to be on the noisy side from the factory. My 08 is louder than my 3/4 ton Silverado and I cna assure its definitely not the tires. There just isn't enough sound absorbing mass. Toss in some anti vibe tiles and a layer of MLV over it. Dynamat is overpriced and covering every square inch is not necessarily optimal...just expensive.

The Audi we got rid of had acoustice wheel well liners, basically a sort of outdoor rated carpeting on the inside of each wheel well. One of them got loose and I took it out because it was the middle of winter and the interior noise jumped amazingly. It was still a quiet car inside, but a significant increase in road noise. See if you can find some wheel well lining to block some of the road noise.

bunch of great advice in here.

i too noticed an increase in noise from the ownership of this car- but its due to the car being fully open. in a sedan your used to the rear seats sealing up the space in the trunk were the rear tires are spinning, but with the rogue its open.

my advice- change the rubber compound. my winter tires and summer tires on the g37s coupe make a WORLD of a difference when it comes to noise levels.
the summer lower profile tires are much stiffer, and harder thus carrying more noise throughout the rims, axles, and framing.
the winter tires are softer, and higher profile and absorb more noise within the higher sidewalls of the tires.

-plus the tread makes a huge difference. some tread tends to hum, almost whistle.

Exclamation Dunlop SP Sport 7000 A/S OEM Tires (2011)

Tire Rack: OEM Tires for 2011 Nissan Rogue AWD SL

Selected excerpts:
  • With 8500 miles on these as oem equipment, i'd have to say these are the noisiest road tires i've ever had.
  • They handle well. No complaints. The ride and noise, however have become intolerable.
  • OE tire that started to "sing" with only 18,000 miles. the road hum at even 20 MPH is loud, nearly undriveable at highway speeds. Run away from these tires.

yup, ours are noisy and the ride is horrible, but they sure do handle nice! I will certainly be looking for a more suitable replacement when these are done!

Goodyear Assurance ComforTred Touring (Grand Touring All-Season)

Initial Review, 500 Miles on Tires

March 03, 2012
I replaced my factory tires after they lasted only 27000 miles with the Goodyear Assurance Comfortred Touring and my vehicle has new life again! Amazing quickness in response and excellent wet road stability. Recently had 50 MPH winds against the vehicle in the rain and it held the road like glue. I love these tires and so far don't regret getting them. When my wife needs tires for her Honda CR-V, I'll be strongly suggesting she get these.

Guess it's all relative, but if you ever drove a Dodge Caliber as I have, with the stock crapola Firestoned tires, you'd depreciate how QUIET the Rogue is!!

I don't skimp on replacement tires. The factory skimps on the OE tires.
