@ MAYHEM, I think you may have "nailed" it when you mentioned the tires. I had to learn the hard way that tires can often be the weakest link, and they're one thing you don't won't to skimp on.

I'm well aware of the value of a decent snow tire, beleive me. What I am unaware of though is what possible condition existed that would prevent me from even spinning the tires. Thats the problem.

The tires on the car are not the issue...a full set of Blizzaks would not have gotten me out of the situation I was in since the car would not allow me to do anything...they wouldn't have kept me out of that same situation either.

it snowed here this weekend, so i finally got the change to test drive it in snow.
I COULD NOT GET THIS THING STUCK. (using all-season tires)

it would pull away from a stop sign flawlessly. like almost there was no snow!
if i really pushed it, it would drift out(fish tail) for a split second, then just act normally.
when i stopped, disengaged vdc, and engaged AWD lock, i opened the door, and watched the back wheel as i hit the gas, and the car would fish-tail and still just go forward.

while driving, it feels like a front wheel drive. easy to steer, easy to drive, easy to forget its an SUV- until it starts slipping, and then it feels like a rear-wheel-drive and handles like one.

ALL IN ALL, IM VERY IMPRESSED.

Had 2" of the greasy skid stuff this AM. Roads were crappy. Car did well. I'm happy with the handling in the snow, understanding that's it's not a truck with locked differentials and high road clearance. At moderate speed it does well and I feel pretty safe, except when the bozos start passing me. Actually gets better mileage at 40 mph than 60.
