Roof rack bar removal?

Do the roof bars come off neatly and cleanly or do I need to find a plug cover to go over the open holes that would be left in my roof?

Every time I look at our 08, my eyes are drawn to the roof bars as an eyesore. Our car is blacka nd because its an 08, all the trim except the 2 Nissan logos is black too, the roof bars are silver and they just look kinda silly to me...on top of that, they make snow removal from the roof more annoying than it really needs to be.

So I figure I have three choices here. Live with it, paint them black to match the rest of the car or take them off. I'd like to just remove them as I have no use for them and all they're doing is looking ugly and decreasing my car's aerodynamics in a virtually unmeasurable way. But if removing them will leave exposed bolt holes that I can't get a convenient plug for then I guess my second best choice would be to paint them...anyone done that? Got any pics to share?

This would be less of an annoyance if the car was newer and had the chromed plastic trim everywhere, but its an 08 and all the trim is body color (which fortunately I happen to prefer)..

Thanks.

Did you check with your local dealership to see if they had plugs?
