Gas mileage

We live at 3500 feet in elevation. Our 2011 Rogue has 6,400 miles on it. We drive 70% city and 30% highway. We are getting 21.6 to 23.5 in city and 24.3 to 29.6 highway. We use regular fuel as per the owners manual

Here in Delaware, the Mean Elevation of the state is 60 feet above sea level. I'm 20 minutes away from the Atlantic Ocean, so only a few feet above sea level. Your mpg is running about the same as mine.

Second time filling up; did the math and unfortunately I'm only getting 23 mpg. That's with a daily commute of 20 miles round trip/16 of that highway; and an all highway 65-ish mile round trip. Regular gas (IAW the user's manual). The "smart" calculator showed me getting 24.2; quite a disparity. I have an 11 Rogue, AWD... not disappointed, just not impressed. Ride is still very comfortable and (albeit still new) fun.

A couple of interesting notes:
1) After my fuel light came on (1st fill up), I was right next to a gas station---pulled in, filled up and had only 1.5 gallons left (just good to know; light on--don't push past 20 more miles, lest you risk the road side assistance option on your insurance).

2) When getting ready to fill up today, my fuel gauge indicated I was just in between the 1/4 and 1/2 mark, however it took 11 gallons to fill up---leaving 4.9 gal. Math for the "miles left to empty" were within range, but the thought that "around half a tank" means "around twice as much more to drive" would be a misnomer.

Cherz!

After the 3rd tank of gas in my 12 ...its averaging 27mpg(on board calculation) back and forth to work. My route is very hilly suburban ....30 miles round trip. 87oct fuel.

Also Im tryn to be light footed and coast the hills as much as possible...average speed is around 40mph. AC off on the AM drive....on in the afternoon.

compression ratio & HP designations.

essentially everything in this world is measurable - so i cant state things are going to exactly the same with regular or premium. but 1 or 5 hp is not noticeable by the driver in any shape or form.
you loose that power if not more on windy or humid days, higher altitudes, really cold days, etc. do you feel the difference? nope. but is there a measurable difference = yes. so they cant boast for example 200hp(while using premium) and then post a sticker REGULAR FUEL and you not get the 200hp that it was tested and claimed to have. it might have 195hp on regular. its a potential false claims law suit.

every engine has a compression ratio, and if you put in fuel that doesn't have octane it might detonate early(THATS ALL OCTANE IS - IT ALLOWS THE FUEL TO BE COMPRESSED MORE), causing engine knock/pinging. thats why our cars are equipped with knock sensors. once this knock is detected, the timing is retarded and the fuel enters the combustion chamber slightly later thus removing its ability to detonated. the few horsepower that is lost, is during the atomization stage of the compression cycle.
the air/fuel ratio is atomized slightly shorter in time, and we are talking so low you will NEVER feel it as the driver. but what you will feel = IS THE SAVINGS.

The onboard calculator is notoriously inaccurate, usually overestimating your mpg's. Although on my best tank it underestimated my usage.
I've tracked every fillup using Fuelly | Share and Compare Your MPG. 85,955 Fuelly users have tracked 2,418,829 fuel-ups in 118,793 vehicles over 681,893,597 miles of driving.

Just made a vacation trip to the gulf from Atlanta. 28.1 mpg hand calc....the onboard said 28.8. At about the halfway point I was averaging 31 mpg then a 20mph head wind kicked up and really knock the mpg down. The sweet spot for best mpg seemed to be 68-72. Also I used cruise only about 50% of the time and as everyone would expect its much less fuel efficient than you can be. AC on all the way. Really pleased with the MPG for this type of vehicle.
