ENGINE OIL = Has Anyone Experimented Yet?

I know our manuals call for 5w-30.
Its getting colder, and im hearing a lot more piston slap(which is normal for this engine due to the piston ring placement/long stroke/short-rod design).
But has anyone experimented yet with different weight oils to help reduce the noise?

For those who dont know, 5w-30 =
5w = winter months. (how thick it gets when cold)
30 = summer months. (how thin it is once hot)

now with -0 temps in NJ i certainly dont want to increase the thickness of the engine oil, because that would increase the time it takes the syrupy oil to get to the critical engine parts upon start-up... SO I ASK, HAS ANYONE USED 0W-XX OILS??
i will be doing an oil change in the next coming days and will buy probably 0w oil to experiment. im thinking a thinner weight oil will not only flow faster and easier to the engine parts at cold morning start-ups, but will also warm up faster, and allow the engine to warm up faster.

comments? suggestions? idea's? = all welcome!

Your best bet would be a 0W-30 100% Synthetic Motor Oil (Group IV or Group V).

Check out this in depth article from AMSOIL Motor Oil Viscosity Grades Explained in Layman's Terms

My ride is about due for an oil change, and as I type it's currently 19F (-7C for those north of civilization), so I may give it a try.

THATS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING, MY FRIEND. idk about going synth tho. no point in the cold.
heat is what destroys oil, and with the current operating temps im gonna save the money from buying synth. what do you think?

and PS: im sponsored by amsoil for the 4th year in a row
thats all i use in my racebike!

Synth may help with this issue. From an Amsoil Dealer:

"For better performance and protection we recommend using Signature Series 0W-30 100% Synthetic Motor Oil (SSO). This is the top performing AMSOIL Motor Oil for gasoline powered light trucks and passenger cars. It uses race-proven technology and provides unsurpassed fuel efficiency and better wear protection than other conventional and synthetic motor oils. It is a 35,000 mile/1-year change interval motor oil. Use it in conjunction with AMSOIL's Super Duty Oil Filter's that specify a change interval of 12,500 miles/6-months, whichever comes first."

i swear by Amsoil. I have and will always be their supporter (as long as their product stays the same) - even before their sponsorship.

People dont understand that Sport-Bikes & F1 Cars 80% of the time on the track have their engines in the 14,000-18,000RPM zone - NOT TO MANY OILS THAT CAN MAINTAIN SOLID PERFORMANCE AND NOT FOAM UP AND BURN UP CAUSING CLOTS AT THAT RPM RANGE.
18,000RPM = the piston is going up&down over 300 times a second.
can you imagine that?

my girl owns the 2006 Yamaha R6 - take a look at the RPM gauge.

BUT SINCE MY ROGUE NEVER SEE'S ANYTHING ABOVE 4,000RPM - i dont think i need a race oil in the engine lol. ill just save the couple dollars and stick to whatever major name-brand is on sale

That gauge would look awesome on our Rogues. I already purchased Amsoil for the Rogue. I also use Amsoil on the R1. Its the only oil I've ever used on it.

idk, i love amsoil but i dont see a reason for it on the rogue.

i can get 5qt's Mobil Super 5W-30 Conventional for $22.45 + $4.99(Purolator Classic Oil Filter) and drive 5,000miles for $27.44 with no problem- Doing the work myself.

Versus that of amsoil which is a high performance oil that the rogue doesnt need. (and having to pay shipping on the oil to boot.)

I've used syn oil for over 20 years. It DOES stay thinner in the cold, and we get down to nearly 30 below.

If I could go up and down 300 times a second I'd be getting clots too.

I thought that's what we were saying, syn stays thin in colder temps and may help alleviate engine noise from cold starts.

Clots? Something more akin to rug burn!

I thought IM stricken said that there was no point to syn oil in the cold and I was stating that IMHO it is a superior product for cold climates, like MN.
