Define accurately. Automotive fuel gauges often vary wildly in how well they track the amount of fuel in the tank, and yes you could have a defective system. HowStuffWorks "How Fuel Gauges Work" has a straight forward explaination with a neat animated graphic.

From my own experience, most fuel gauges seem to be really "off" once they get down to the 1/4 mark. Staying above 1/2 a tank gives somewhat better results.

Well, I understand how they work, but I have owned a lot of vehicles in my life and this is the least accurate. When I fill it and it gauge goes up, it does not move until I have driven almost 200 miles. Then the last quarter tank goes fast as it does in most cars. It is not a big deal. I am used to it now. It is just not real accurate so I cannot see how the mpg computer can be any better. Not a big deal.

I reset the Trip A counter when I fill the tank. I can be assured that I'll get at least 400 miles per tank, so I use that as a "gauge."

Sometimes, but not frequently, I'll let the tank run down until the warning light comes on. I do this occasionally just to make sure it is functioning.

Generally I fill up at 1/4 tank, or 1/2 tank in the winter. I'm gonna use the gas anyway so I don't make a habit of running it way down.
