08 Rogue Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPS)

The 2008 Nissan Rogue will be using speed-sensitive Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPS), a sophisticated system that helps correct for road irregularities and improves overall steering feel.
Conventional power steering systems use an engine-driven hydraulic gear, which saps power and efficiency from the engine. The 2008 Nissan Rogue's new EPS system uses an electric motor, rather than the engine’s accessory drive. This new system helps improve fuel economy and eliminates the hydraulic noises typical of conventional hydraulic power-assisted steering systems.

For those of you with a taste for the technical side of things the following link has a great writeup and model of the typical EPS system. Automotive DesignLine | Electric power steering: one good turn deserves another

Did Nissan use EPS on any model before Rogue?

I know that the 07 Sentra and Altima hybrid both had it but I'm not sure about the others. I do know that the Toyota Prius has been using it since 05 so it's a proven system and since it can gain 2 to 3 MPG over the hydralic system it'll really help the gas mileage for an AWD vehicle.

So this is probably the reason while checking out where all my fluid reservoirs are located I could not find a power steering fluid check point. This is probably since it's electric power steering and not hydraulic so no fluid is involved ?

A lady in her 3 year old Prius was nearly killed when her EPS failed recently. It takes the strength of 3 gorillas to turn the wheel if the system fails. Hang on tight! Toyota will probably revise their Prius setup.
