Higher octane fuels actually means that the fuel is less likely to burn. What this means is that higher octane fuels wont auto-ignite due to compression in the engine (before the spark plugs lights the mixture). Therefore you should only use higher octane fuels if you have a high compression engine, or one with a turbo or supercharger. This is the theory any way.
